Don’t sugar coat it…ITS WRONG

I was just browsing the internet when I came across GCU’s Erase the Grey Campaign. This is basically a social campaign that seeks to enlighten the general public on issues that we sometimes take for granted but are so wrong. The one that got my attention was on the issue of sexual harassment as in the image. This immediately brought back memories. About a month before moving to Glasgow, in the wake of some personal problems I was facing, a friend called and was very emotional. She was being sexually harassed at work and felt so helpless. Commons like i love seeing your boobs or attempts to touch them are NOT acceptable.‘’The world is already competitive and the least thing I want is get blacklisted by a powerful corporation for speaking up’’ she will say. Irrespective of what her fears were I felt she had to speak up. This was not the first I heard a complaint by a female employee and even witnessed one. I know what you may be thinking and I thought so too, with all the Me Too Movement and gender equality parades, how is this still going on. Well it was and surely is. For someone who knew what I was going through personally, she had to have really needed my help to seek it. Hence I was determined to offer it. I advised her to speak up and even helped her with how she should go about it. We knew the chances for an action to be taken were slim but we had to stand for what was right. I kept in touch as she filed a complaint after she confronted him to no positive result. As you would expect she was told an investigation will be made which till today I doubt it was. A week into the report she felt unsafe and targeted at the work place and so resigned. That was a bold move and I regrettably advised against it but she was determined not to work there. Fast forward to me in Glasgow, I got a call from her and she had landed a new and better job and the company she used to work for was facing bankruptcy due to the banking crises in Ghana. I share this particularly because until now, I didn’t notice I was an active citizen. I am here smiling and feeling proud for standing for what was right. Education does have an impact outside the classroom and there is absolutely no doubt that my drive and that of GCU is in Sync. # I am an active and global citizen and I stand for what is right.
