WE are indeed born leaders…

Leadership and Confidence is part of our DNA.

I just got back home from work and i came to a realization, first hand that every role we take up in whatever position we find our self is important for self-development. Let me explain. I work for an agency that recruits hospitality staff for events. I have been with them for about 6 months so I guess you can safely say I am a senior staff member ha-ha. I had a shift and I was at my post as a glass collector as always but this was no usual shift.  For some reason most of the staff posted for this event have never worked in a Hilton hotel before even though they are pros in hospitality and as such I could sense a bit of panic and distress as organisation at Hilton hotels are largely different from other hotels. I was in that position just a few months back so I could easily relate. Noting the discomfort I approached one of the rookie Hilton wine waiters I was familiar with from working at other venues and she admitted she was disoriented and the event hadn’t even started yet. She added the manager was rude and impatient when giving instructions which I could relate to but to be fair, he has a lot on his hands and likes everything to be done as it has always been so it’s fast and coordinated. To my surprise none of the recurrent staffs were taking the time mentor the newcomers. I approached the manager and requested to be moved from my line of work for a moment since I wasn’t busy at my post to mentor them before the event starts and they embarrass themselves. Having worked with him for so many times he agreed. I switched duties to wine waiting and in just 20min I was confident the new Hamilton staffs were ready. I met some of my colleagues (both old and new Hamilton staffs) after work who praised me for what I did and suggested I take up a supervisor role next time which I smiled at. I share this story because I may have over looked a quality I possess instead of building on it. Let me take you back to the start of my Uni at GCU for a moment so you get the full picture. I created a social media platform for all the masters’ student in my cohort so we can help each other out in finding our way around campus and time tabling since 99% of us were new to the university. At the time I didn’t know if it will help but I did it anyways. Then came the selection of a student rep. I always believed I was not confident or a leader material so I was trying to convince a friend of mine to take that role. The thought of going for meetings with academic staff members scared me to death. To my surprise during the nominations, I was nominated by a colleague I have always admired to be confident and out spoken. I thought to myself, if she thinks I can do it, then maybe I am good for it. I took up the role trying my best to keep everyone informed and reminded, attending meetings and in most cases being asked of my opinion on matters I would never dare speak about. With all these happening I had no idea I was not only building my confidence, but leadership skills as well. Now not only does my colleagues at uni think am doing a good job but work as well. I believe there are some things you want to do but fear is holding you back. If my experience thought me anything, it is that we all have hidden qualities screaming to be let out. I am still developing mine and I get better each passing day. Thanks guys #GCU common good attribute #confidence #responsible leadership
